TORONTO — Famous Players Ltd. plans to spend C$75 million ($54.7 million) to open 13 new multiplexes by mid-1999, adding 136 screens to the 511 screens it operates across Canada.
The expansion is part of a $109.5 million program the Toronto-based exhib outlined in December. The company, a Viacom unit, announced openings in Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia.
John Bailey, chief operating officer, told a news conference that many of the theaters will include wall-to-wall screens, digital sound, video games and Pizza Hut Express outlets.
“We’re hoping that people will stay longer in our theaters because we’re expanding the environment,” he said.
