Walt Disney Pictures has cast the live-action version of “Mr. Magoo,” with Kelly Lynch starring as the lead villainess, joining Nick Chinlund, Malcolm McDowell, Stephen Tobolowsky, Jennifer Garner and Ernie Hudson.
Leslie Nielsen will play the nearsighted lead character (Daily Variety, Nov. 13).
Pic is scheduled to roll later this month in Vancouver, with Stanley Tong (“First Strike”) helming. Disney has scheduled it for a Christmas season release.
Lynch will play an international jewel thief who seduces Magoo. McDowell plays her boss. Chinlund (“Con Air,” “A Brother’s Kiss”) plays another jewel thief also stalking the unwitting Magoo. Keeslar will play Magoo’s nephew, and Garner plays his girlfriend.
Hudson and Tobolowsky will portray government agents.
The studio is hoping to create a worldwide franchise out of the cartoon character, voiced by the late Jim Backus.
The pic will be produced by Ben Myron, with Andre Morgan and Hank Saperstein as executive producers.
Meanwhile, Lynch will shoot “Magoo” simultaneously with “Noose,” a Ted Demme-directed picture about a low-level Boston Irish hood, Noose (Denis Leary), who clashes with the neighborhood boss. Lynch would play a yuppie investment banker who has a one-night stand with Noose. Pic will be produced by Leary’s Apostle Pictures and Demme’s Spanky Pictures.
Lynch was repped by Geyer Kosinski at William Morris. Keeslar was repped by Chris Andrews and Paul Martino at ICM. Chinlund was repped by Todd Eisner at Writers & Artists, manager Davien Littlefield and attorney Carlos Goodman.
