L.A. station goes live from Mars

KLCS-TV (Channel 58), the UHF TV station licensed to the Los Angeles Unified School District, will be the exclusive Southern California broadcaster of the first live telecast from the surface of Mars on the Fourth of July.

“Mission Mars: A Celebration of Space” will air live from noon to 6:30 p.m. that day, though NASA predicts it will take several hours for the first picture from the Mars surface to be transmitted back via the NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory spacecraft Pathfinder.

Pictures from Mars were broadcast in 1976 after the landing of the Viking spacecraft, but they were not beamed back live.
