‘Journal’ scratches Glass

NEW YORK — King World will replace Nancy Glass as the sole anchor of its syndicated magazine series “American Journal” with the brother/sister co-anchor team of Michelle Dabney-Perez and her brother Charles Perez.

Dabney-Perez is a reporter for “Journal” and Charles hosted his own Tribune Entertainment talkshow last year. A King World spokesman declined comment, but other sources say the company will not pick up Glass’ contract, which expires June 1, because she didn’t fit in with the show’s new youth-oriented focus.

Glass, a veteran journalist who previously served as a reporter with “Inside Edition,” a correspondent with WNYW-TV New York and as co-host of the Lifetime talkshow “Attitudes,” says she’s mulling offers to do a syndicated talkshow.

“American Journal” launched a big effort beginning last September to pull in younger viewers by creating a concept called “Team A.J.” and sending young reporters out to cover events like movie premieres and rock concerts. So far, the strategy isn’t working. For example, in the February sweeps, the rating of “Journal” among women 18 to 34 (in its 105 markets) was a barely visible 1.3.

The Perez duo will make their debut as co-hosts this September.
