Jim McCawley

Jim McCawley, a writer and former producer of “The Tonight Show,” died Saturday of lung cancer at his Los Angeles home. He was 54.

McCawley joined “The Tonight Show” in 1977 and began his showbiz career as a production assistant for the Broadway productions of “Bye Bye Birdie” and “All American.” His other entertainment-related work included stints as a supervising producer on “Vicki” and as a writer and correspondent for Los Angeles all-news radio station KFWB.

McCawley is survived by his wife, Sharon, son James, daughter Gwyneth, mother Bernadette Jack and father James.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Chapel of the Oaks at Oakwood Memorial Park, 22601 Lassen in Chatsworth. Contributions can be made to the McCawley Memorial Fund, c/o David Berger, 9430 Olympic Blvd., Beverly Hills, CA 90212.
