ROME — After years of rock-bottom industry morals and dwindling box office share, Italian film produc-tion this season has increased its slice of the domestic market to almost 30%, the highest proportion in five years.
The 32 Italo features and 10 co-productions released nationally since last fall, when the current B.O. season kicked off, have drawn admissions of just under 14 million. Tickets sold for roughly the same number of releases the pre-vious season numbered about 4 million less.
The upswing is due largely to the phenomenal performance of Tuscan actor-director Leonardo Pierracioni’s breezy comedy “The Cyclone,” which has become the highest-grossing film of all time in Italy, with takings approaching 40 million.
