'Primary Colors' back in play at U

John Travolta and Mike Nichols are deferring part of their fees and Universal Pictures is pounding out a more manageable budget on “Primary Colors” to keep the project at the studio, sources said. No deals are completed, but insiders said the two sides have come to a compromise and a deal is expected shortly. Nichols shopped the project around after Universal voiced concern about the steep $75 million budget, and asked Nichols and Travolta to defer their upfront fees. “Colors” moved back to U in mid-December. They’ve now worked out a package that has Travolta deferring a portion of his $20 million salary and Nichols deferring part of his $5 million. Things are now moving along nicely.
