Hunter to helm ‘Jook’ pic

Quincy Jones and David Salzman’s QDE Entertainment is close to signing director Paul Hunter to helm “Q’s Jook Joint,” a movie inspired by Jones’ platinum album.

The picture will be produced by Jones, Salzman and Joel Simon for HBO/NYC Prods. “Jook Joint” received seven nominations for this year’s Grammy Awards.

The period pic is about a young man who works at a jook joint and falls in love with a woman he meets at the club. But the woman, an aspiring singer, is the mistress of a high-level gangster.

Hunter is a renowned video director who has worked with artists such as Whitney Houston, Warren G, Heavy D and Keith Sweat.

He will work on the script with Mark Brown, whose credits include the upcoming Island Pictures/Gramercy comedy “How to Be a Player” and “Homeboy” for Fox Family Films. They are both repped by Larry Kennar of Writers & Artists Agency.
