Anthony Hopkins has officially committed to star with Brad Pitt in Martin Brest’s “Meet Joe Black” for Universal Pictures, sources said. The move reunites the two actors, who previously worked together on TriStar Pictures’ “Legends of the Fall.”

“Meet Joe Black” is based on the 1934 Fredric March film “Death Takes a Holiday,” about an overworked Death who takes a vacation on earth and falls in love. Hopkins will play William Parrish, the businessman and family patriarch who helps teach Death the meaning of life as he’s struggling for his own. The studio had been eyeing Hopkins for some time.

The production will start in early June. However, Hopkins will first work simultaneously on two Steven Spielberg projects: “Amistad,” which Spielberg is directing for DreamWorks/HBO Pictures, and Amblin’s Martin Campbell-helmed “The Mask of Zorro” which is shooting in Tlaxcala, Mexico. Hopkins is taking on the John Quincy Adams role in “Amistad.”

Hopkins is repped by CAA’s Rick Nicita and manager Bob Palmer.
