BUENOS AIRES — ESPN announced it has purchased Argentine sports channel Telesport S.A.
In January, the channel will start broadcasting Spanish-language regional programming for Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.
There will be plenty of competition in the soccer-crazy territory. ESPN will compete with Fox Sports Americas, Torneos y Competencias and a handful of local broadcasters.
ESPN’s acquisition manager Jorge Tabanera said that the bulk of programming will be Spanish and Italian soccer league matches, and Argentine basketball, rugby, volley and golf. Top overseas events will be broadcast as well.
ESPN started Spanish satellite transmissions in 1993.
