‘Ellen’ seeing red over scripts

Perhaps frustrated by all the leaks surrounding the coming out of “Ellen,” Disney TV execs were taking no chances with draft scripts for the infamous episodes.

The scripts, according to sources, were printed on a dark red or maroon colored paper, making them virtually impossible to fax — as well as to read.

Meanwhile, ABC and Disney confirmed that Oprah Winfrey and Laura Dern will star in “Ellen’s” April 30 episode, in which Ellen DeGeneres’ character discovers, in the network’s words, “a very personal side of her nature” (Daily Variety, Feb. 20). While ABC had no problem saying that Dern will portray a gay woman on the episode in question, the network and studio still can’t bring themselves to say Ellen is gay.

No word yet on what the show will come up with for a follow-up episode. Most expect it to deal with Ellen informing her family. Whether it will change the heart of the show, which is about a single woman and her friends, remains to be seen.
