CBS is expected to announce Wednesday its investment in the online service SportsLine USA.
SportsLine offers Internet “radio” broadcasts, sports scores, news, photos, video clips and live discussion groups. It sent a crew to the Super Bowl in January to interview players and gather other material.
If the deal goes through, SportsLine could carry programming produced by CBS Sports.
SportsLine is a direct competitor of Web-based service ESPNET SportsZone, which is partly owned by ABC through ESPN. NBC and MSNBC partner Microsoft Corp. are reportedly considering a similar offering.
Although ESPN’s Web site is known to be one of the most successful online areas in terms of attracting users, Webcasting is not yet a money-making venture for the great majority of companies.
