Beacon Pictures is leading its own cheers after picking up the teen dark comedy pitch “Cheer Fever” from Jessica Bendinger. Plot concerns the cutthroat competitive cheerleading world, the company said Wednesday in confirming the deal.
Beacon shelled out a low-six-figure payday for the pitch, which was described as a story about a peppy cheerleader who learns that honesty and team spirit are more important than fantastic steps and designer duds.
Caitlin Scanlon, VP of development for Beacon, brought in the project. She will oversee it with exec VP of production Jon Shestack.
Bendinger has worked as a model, a magazine writer, a scribe for MTV News and a video director. She has written one previous script, “Hit Girl,” which is being considered by several companies.
Jeff Field and Gregory McKnight of the William Morris Agency repped Bendinger in the deal.
