Anchor’s away over Springer

WMAQ Chicago news anchor Carol Marin has decided to resign to protest the station’s decision to hire talkshow host Jerry Springer as a commentator during the May sweeps, sources say.

WMAQ did not return phone calls, but sources say the station will let Marin out of her contract, which may have been set to expire soon anyway.

Springer told Daily Variety that Marin’s resignation “is not my concern,” and there’s “no question” that he’ll go forward with his commentaries, starting Monday. In fact, Springer will probably address the whole “amusing” controversy head on.

“If I talk about anything else, no one will pay attention,” Springer added. “It would be more exciting if she were there and then walked out. But I can’t create that theater.”
