All American TV has inked a deal to produce an entertainment talkshow for Discovery’s new Animal Planet cable net called “The Pet Shop,” which will be hosted by comic Andy Kindler and is set to debut in October.
The talkshow, described as a cross between “The Rosie O’Donnell Show” and “Wild Kingdom,” features celebrity guests and their pets. Segments include an animal star search, celebrity pet home movies and a pet psychic.
Paul Buccieri and Rob Weiss, All American’s senior VPs of nonfiction programming and executive producers of the upcoming syndie talker “Arthel & Fred,” will also executive produce “The Pet Shop,” their first cable project for All American. The show was also developed by David E. Gerber, director of production at Animal Planet.
Animal Planet has ordered 13 hours or 22 half-hours, with a final series length still undetermined. The talkshow will debut as a weekly primetime show with the anticipation of moving to strip. All American is also producing a gameshow called “ZooVenture” for Animal Planet, which debuts this month in 22 million households.
“In trying to book celebrities, we found we were able to get people to agree to come on our show who would never do a regular talkshow,” Weiss said. “We think this is because people, whether famous or not, just love their pets. For most people, their pets are like their kids.”
Celebrity guests will be given the option of donating their appearance fees to their favorite animal charities. Host Kindler has appeared on the Showtime special “Comedy From the Danger Zone” on Comedy Central and in the CBS pilot “The Breaks.”
