The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences’ Medal of Commendation award will now bear the name of its last recipient, the late John A. Bonner, a sound engineer and director of special projects at Warner Hollywood Studios.
The Academy has given the Medal of Commendation occasionally since 1977, upon the recommendation of the scientific and technical awards committee “in appreciation for outstanding service and dedication in upholding the high standards of the Academy.”
Bonner, who died last year, received the medal in 1995.
“No one better represents the concept of service and dedication to the Academy than John Bonner,” said Academy president Arthur Hiller.
He served as an Academy governor representing the sound branch and as chair of the sci-tech and theater sound inspection committees for many years.
