ABC to air suit rebuttal

NEW YORK — ABC News lost a North Carolina jury’s sympathy in a $5.5 million damage award to Food Lion last week, but the web’s “PrimeTime Live” will seek to change their minds, and those of the public, too.

A sweeps installment of “PTL” on Feb. 12 will weigh in on the use of hidden cameras in investigative pieces, the central issue in Food Lion’s claim that two producers concealed their identities to gain jobs and document unsani-tary practices in the supermarket’s meat department. Jury members will appear on camera, and if ABC can con-vince them, it may prove fodder for a planned appeal of the verdict.

Of course, the tactic could backfire, leaving jurors more convinced than ever of the propriety of their verdict. But if ABC gets its way, the web just needs to make sure the appeals judge is watching.
