Matthew Pearson, a columnist and photographer for Black Beat magazine, died March 10 of a heart attack. He was 36.
A native of New Orleans, Pearson owned his first camera at the age of 4. During his 15 years of photojournalism, he documented the careers of such celebrities as Muhammad Ali, Diana Ross, Chaka Khan, Babyface and Mary J. Blige.
He started working as a columnist and West Coast contributor for Black Beat in 1982, when the publication was called Soul Teen Magazine.
He is survived by his mother.
