Singer-songwriter Laura Nyro, who wrote some memorable hits of the mid-1960s through early 1970s, died April 8 of ovarian cancer at her home in Danbury, Connecticut. She was 49.

Despite crafting many memorable songs between 1966 and 1972 that became hits for performers like Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, The Fifth Dimension and Three Dog Night, Blood, Sweat & Tears, among others, and having a unique introspective performing style, she was mostly overlooked as a solo artist. Song hits included “Wedding Bell Blues,” “Eli’s Coming,” “And When I Die” and “Stoney End.”
