Songwriter Eliot Daniel, who composed the theme song for “I Love Lucy” and was twice Oscar nominated for his songs, died Dec. 6 of cancer in Placerville. He was 89.
Daniel didn’t think the 1950s hit television comedy starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz would be successful, and requested that his name not appear in the credits, according to friend Richard Blanchard.
“He said he didn’t think (the show) was going to make it,” Blanchard said. “He told them, ‘I’ll write the music, but you have to leave my name off.’ He said he was a movie guy and didn’t want to be associated with television.”
After the show became successful, the Boston native asked for credit. Daniel has received royalties from the syndicated reruns ever since.
Daniel is survived by a daughter.
