LONDON — Dick Emery is ankling as chief exec of BBC World-wide, the pubcaster’s commercial arm, to become chief exec of U.K. TV, the BBC’s pay TV joint venture with Flextech.
Emery will stay at BBC Worldwide until April, giving him time to oversee the completion of the pubcaster’s global alliance with Discovery Communications, which is taking longer to close than expected.
Emery has three decades of marketing and advertising sales experience in the ITV network, which will help the BBC navigate the unfamiliar waters of commercial TV with its U.K. TV venture.
That undertaking already has launched three themed channels on cable — U.K. Horizons, U.K. Areana and U.K. Style — but the main push will come next year when these and a number of other U.K. TV services will form a central part of British Digital Broadcasting’s digital terrestrial package.
