Banff crix: ‘Gate’ heavenly

BANFF, Alberta — “The Gate of Heavenly Peace,” a U.S. documentary about the 1989 protests at Tiananmen Square, won the first-ever international critics prize at the Banff Television Festival Friday.

The three-hour docu, which premiered at the 1995 New York Film Festival, was chosen from 15 winners of the Rockie awards handed out earlier in the week. Those prize-winners were selected from 76 nominees culled from 722 entries from 38 countries.

“The Gate of Heavenly Peace” was produced by Richard Gordon, who was in Banff to accept the award, and Carma Hinton of Long Bow Group; in association with Independent Television Service (ITVS) and WGBH Boston.

The critics jury, led by Time magazine senior writer Richard Zoglin, included journalists from Canada, Australia, Britain, Japan, France and Germany.
