Foxy Brown; Warren G; Redman

Foxy Brown; Warren G; Redman (House of Blues; 999 capacity; $ 22.50) Presented inhouse. Performers: Foxy Brown, Case, Gavin; Redman, Two Tecs; Warren G, DJ Rectangle, the Twinz. Reviewed March 6, 1997. House of Blues was packed to the rafters to greet rapidly rising Def Jam rappers Foxy Brown and Warren G, but their sets paled in comparison to less radio- and retail-friendly labelmate Redman. Redman slipped between the two platinum heavy hitters, and turned in the best of three 30-minute sets. Though he lacks the pop sheen of the headliners, his recent release "Muddy Waters" has gone gold, and his high-energy, freestyle rap swept up fans with the intensity of a hurricane. Hand-waving and frantic head-nodding ensued en masse, particularly when rappers Eric Sermon, Keith Murray and Method Man joined him onstage. Headliner Warren G loaded up on R&B-injected raps, most of which were laid back to the point of being lackluster. Even the presence of singer Ron Isley and the performance of megahits from Warren's multiplatinum "G-Funk" failed to ignite any spark; unfamiliar songs from Warren's upcoming "Take A Look Over Your Shoulder" fared worse. Opener Foxy Brown, backed by a crew of dancers and bouncing about in bikini top and tight shorts, was clear and commanding. Explicit cuts from her platinum debut, "Ill Na Na," caused percolation in the audience, but never brought it to full boil.
