Donovan

Donovan (Henry Fonda Theater; 863 seats; $ 27.50) Promoted by Nederlander. Reviewed March 21, 1997. Those who remember Donovan as a sort of cosmic hippie bozo won't find anything to change their minds in the current incarnation; those who cherish him for it will find lots to like. Donovan, the Scottish singersongwriter who's the current restoration project of producer Rick Rubin, is promoting his recent American Records release, "Sutras," a collection cut from the same cloth as some of the best songs generated during his hit years. The 90-minute solo acoustic set was divided into distinct sections: For the vintage material and most encores, he stood at one side of the stage and accompanied himself on an amplified acoustic guitar; for the "Sutras"' material (including "Nirvana,"' adapted from a text on Eastern spirituality, and "El Dorado,"' from an Edgar Allen Poe poem), he sat cross-legged on a carpet at the other side of the stage, playing another acoustic guitar into a microphone. The older songs stretched back to his pre-"Sunshine Superman" period --- Buffy Sainte-Marie's "Universal Soldier," his own "Catch the Wind" and "Colours" --- before moving into the hit years of "Sunshine Superman," "Hurdy Gurdy Man" and "There Is a Mountain," the least likely inclusion being the funky "Barabajangal." Some songs had a harder edge than original recordings; taking "Atlantis" at a relatively brisk tempo worked against its anthem quality. Was the singer exhibiting nervous energy here, or just anxious to go home? AU: Todd Everett
