Daily Variety fete toasts up-and-comers
Ten up-and-coming indie directors chosen by Daily Variety’s editors were honored at a bash Monday night at the Sundance festival, hosted by Daily Variety in association with American Airlines. Helmers Neil Abramson, Brad Anderson, Shirley Barrett, Mary Harron, Jan Sverak and Hal Salwen were on hand to receive commemorative plaques from Daily Variety vice president and publisher Gerry Byrne.
The night before, Sverak won the Golden Globe for best foreign film for “Kolya.” “The pressure’s on the rest of you nine,” quipped Byrne.
Helmer honorees Wes Anderson, Alfonso Cuaron, Leon Gast and Michael Winterbottom were unable to attend due to filming commitments, but the Stein Eriksen Lodge in Deer Valley was host to more than 300 revelers from the Sundance crowds.
