BBC eyes 24-hour radio service

LONDON — The BBC unveiled plans Tuesday for a 24-hour global English-language radio news service to complement its existing World Service broadcasts.

“The World Service has developed a detailed strategy for the next five years, for discussion with government,” the BBC said in its 1996-97 annual report.

“The strategy envisages a continuous news and information service in English to be delivered alongside the existing broad mix of English-language programs,” it added.BBC director-general John Birt said the World Service was also exploring the launch of “major new services for the Internet.”

The radio service broadcasts in 45 languages and has listeners in some 140 countries.
