In its second year, the Geffen Playhouse announced Monday that it will bring Frank Langella, Debbie Allen, the avant garde legit troupe Mabou Mines and two West Coast preems to Westwood auds.
The season bows Sept. 30 with the preview perfs of “Old Wicked Songs,” written by Jon Marans and directed by Seth Barrish. The play will have its West Coast preem Oct. 8 and run through Nov. 2. Play is about an arrogant American piano prodigy who is sent to Vienna to study with an elderly teacher.
From Dec. 2-28, Mabou Mines will run
“Peter and Wendy,” directed by Lee Breuer and adapted from J.M. Barrie’s 1911 novel by Liza Lorwin. Karen Kandel will reprise her numerous roles from the Gotham production, including Wendy, Captain Hook, Peter Pan and Nana the Dog.
Allen will play the one-woman version of abolitionist Harriet Tubman in the West Coast preem of “Harriet’s Return.” Production will run Jan. 27 through March 1.
Karen Jones Meadows wrote the piece, which documents Tubman’s story from her youngest days in slavery in the 1820s to her escape from a Maryland plantation to her creation of the historic underground railroad.
Allen, an Emmy-winning thesp on “Fame ,” is a producer on Steven Spielberg’s “Amistad” for DreamWorks.
Langella will star in August Strindberg’s “The Father,” adapted by Richard Nelson. The play, which moves to the Geffen from last year’s Broadway run, is about a cavalry captain and his wife who clash bitterly over the education of their 17-year-old daughter. Play runs March 31 through May 3.
Another project that has yet to be named will round out the season May 26-June 28.
