Knife Brothers

A good old-fashioned Italo farce in perfect '50s style, "Knife Brothers" places a rather large bet that auds are tired of all the blatant sex and nudity that has flooded local comedies since the '60s. Story idea comes from B.O. kings Carlo and Enrico Vanzina, who prudently handed directing chores over to the experienced Maurizo Ponzi. Lacking the freshness and would-be modernity of recent hits like "The Cyclone," and shot without B.O. names, pic will have an uphill road to travel to score big locally with nostalgia freaks. Guelfo (Fabio Canino), a snobbish Florentine aristo, gleefully prepares to inherit a bundle after the death of his tight-fisted mother. But her will splits his inheritance with Felice (Emilio Solfrizzi), an illegitimate brother Guelfo never knew existed. Leaving his job as a waiter down south in Bari, Felice and his Neapolitan chum Tonio (Antonio Stornaiolo) drive to Florence and move into the swanky family villa.

A war between Felice and Guelfo ensues, enlivened by the buxom, fast-talking Baroness Sonia Filipova (Simona Ventura), whom they both lust after. Things change however, when they discover the family is ruined and the inheritance doesn’t exist.

Tale has the kind of guileless good humor that brings a smile to the lips but rarely laughter. Southerners Solfrizzi (who co-penned the script) and Stornaiolo, who have worked in TV and cabaret as a duo, make an effective

blue-collar foil for the effete, toothy nobleman Canino, while TV soubrette Ventura, making her screen debut, has a full-size presence.

They are charmingly directed by helmer Ponzi, a reliable storyteller who keeps everything in balance, without reaching beyond the confines of the genre. Tech credits are unremarkable.
