WideScreen fest opens with ‘Boys’

The third annual WideScreen Film Festival is set to bow Oct. 31 with a screening of “The Lost Boys” and discussion with helmer Joel Schumacher at the Karen Carpenter Performing Arts Center at Cal State University Long Beach.

“Lost Boys” will be the first of 12 pics shown over the course of three weekends through Nov. 16, with the intent of preserving wide-format films. The array of features will include pics as divergent as “The Big Trail” and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.”

Each screening also will feature discussions with directors and production designers from the pics.

Other pics include “Sleeping Beauty,” “The Wild Bunch,” “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (Nov. 1-2), “They Shoot Horses Don’t They?,” “Forbidden Planet,” “Spartacus” (Nov. 7-9), “The Rocketeer,” “My Fair Lady” and “The Deer Hunter” (Nov. 14-16).

Variety of speakers

Speakers expected to attend include Schumacher, Walt Disney preservationist Scott MacQueen, Sydney Pollack, Joe Johnston, Gene Allen, Michael Cimino and James Bissell.
