‘Troopers,’ ‘Bean’ hit big at B.O.

Ticket sales up 3%

The solid $22.1 million landing of Sony’s “Starship Troopers,” coupled with the surprisingly robust $12.7 million debut of Gramercy’s “Bean,” led the weekend B.O. to a healthy $83.6 million tally.

Ticket sales were up 3% from the comparable frame last year, when Buena Vista’s “Ransom” absconded with $34.2 million, 20th Century Fox’s sophomore “William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet” played to $9 million, and New Line’s “Set it Off” bowed to $8.8 million.

In its fourth week, Sony and Mandalay’s horror pic “I Know What You Did Last Summer” still thrilled, dropping 31% to $6.5 million. The film, which has cumed an impressive $54.2 million, continued to outgross its star-driven litter-mate, Warner Bros.’ “The Devils Advocate.”

“Advocate,” also off 31% from the previous weekend, moved down a notch to fourth place with $5.1 million.

MGM’s “Red Corner” dropped 34%, the sharpest fall-off among top 10 holdovers. The Richard Gere-starrer appears on track to finish at just under $30 million.

Opening in the No. 6 slot, Warner Bros.’ “Mad City” went away with just $5.1 million on 2,194 street corners for a maddeningly soft $2,119 average.

For “City” star John Travolta, the picture marks the end of an astounding string of wide release hits, including Paramount’s “Face/Off,” which grossed $112 million domestically; New Line’s “Michael” ($95.3 million); Buena Vista’s “Phenomenon” ($104.6 million); Fox’s “Broken Arrow” ($70.7 million); and MGM’s “Get Shorty” ($72.1 million).

Travolta’s last outing, Miramax’s limited release “She’s So Lovely,” bowed to just $3 million, eventually reaching $7.3 million.

Travolta’s career was reborn with the release of Miramax’s 1994 black comedy “Pulp Fiction,” which grossed $107.9 million in North America. He stumbled briefly with Savoy’s 1995 commercial misfire “White Man’s Burden.”

Meanwhile, Fox Searchlight’s “The Full Monty” still is performing. Down just 6% to $1.3 million despite narrowing its run from 721 to 591 theaters, “Monty” has grossed $28.5 million to date.

The comedy, which premiered in January at Sundance, surpassed the $100 million mark in worldwide theatrical grosses over the weekend.
