Ellis Mercantile Co. — established in 1908 to provide the entertainment industry with handprops, weapons and other objects for use in features, TV shows and commercials — has been acquired by Tapestry Group Inc. and its principals Dan Pearlman and Bob Wolf.
“Rumors of a possible sale of Ellis to one of its competitors have floated around the industry for the past 18 months,” Pearlman and Wolf said in a statement, adding that they plan to restore the props and custom graphics company to its once preeminent status.
Ellis, familiar to three generations of Hollywood propmasters, has extensive inventory at its 55,000-square-foot La Brea Avenue facilities.
New owner Pearlman is a marketing professional. Wolf is a former president and CEO of advertising agency Chiat/Day.
