Strand Releasing has acquired all U.S. rights to the late Marcello Mastroianni’s final film, “Journey to the Beginning of the World.”
The film, by Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira, was an official out-of-competition selection at the recent Cannes Film Festival
Strand, the L.A.-based specialized distributor, plans to release the film in early 1998.
“Journey” focuses on a French actor who, while on location in Portugal, decides to visit his dead father’s hometown to meet his long-lost aunt.
“The touching thing is that it parallels Mastroianni’s life so closely it’s heartbreaking,” said Marcus Hu, Strand co-president.
“Journey,” a French-Portuguese co-production, was produced by Paolo Branco. It also stars Jean-Yves Gautier, Leonor Silveira, Diogo Doria and Isabel De Castro.
Strand distributed de Oliveira’s 1995 film, “The Convent,” starring Catherine Deneuve and John Malkovich.
