Searchlight reels in ‘Fish’

Fox Searchlight Pictures, garnering a decent buzz for its competition entry “The Ice Storm,” has hooked North American rights to Stefan Schwartz’s “Shooting Fish” from Winchester Films, the arthouse company confirmed Thursday.

Shot in Great Britain, pic stars Dan Futterman (“The Birdcage”), Stuart Townsend (“Resurrection Man”) and Kate Beckinsale (“Cold Comfort Farm”).

The comedy is about two overqualified and underemployed friends who decide to find a way to make £1 million each. They hook up with an opportunistic girl (Beckinsale) who has her own visions of gold.

Schwartz helmed and wrote the pic, which is his second feature after the British hit “Soft Top, Hard Shoulder.”

The pic was produced by Richard Holmes of the Gruber Bros. and Glynis Murray of Tomboy Films.

“Stefan Schwartz is a visionary new director and we couldn’t be more excited to have snatched ‘Shooting Fish’ away from a band of hungry competitors,” said Lindsay Law, president of Fox Searchlight.
