Oscar winner Maximilian Schell has joined the cast of the DreamWorks/Paramount space disaster thriller “Deep Impact,” about a rogue comet on a collision course with Earth.
The Richard Zanuck-produced pic is currently shooting on location in Washington, D.C., under the direction of Mimi Leder.
Schell teams up with stars Robert Duvall, Vanessa Redgrave, Morgan Freeman, Tea Leoni and Elijah Wood. In the film, Earthlings must build a spaceship to intercept and destroy a comet that’s heading directly for the third rock from the sun.
The big-budget sci-fi pic is slated to smash into theaters in summer 1998.
The role caps a busy time for Schell, who has already worked in five features this year. And this fall, Schell, who took home the best actor Oscar for “Judgment at Nuremberg,” will go on tour to promote his first novel, “The Rebels,” from BMG Publishing.
Schell’s “Deep Impact” deal was brokered by his agents, Niki Mirisch and Merritt Blake of the Blake Agency, and manager Dannielle Thomas at InterAct Management.
