MGM, Tekno ink book pact

Everyone has heard the familiar lament: The book was better than the movie. Now MGM and Tekno Books, a division of Big Entertainment Inc., are trying to capitalize on the adage.

Tekno and MGM Consumer Products have pacted to develop books based on movies and television shows selected from MGM’s total libraries of 4,000 films and 8,200 episodes of TV programming.

“We’re planning an across-the-board variety of books,” said Beth Bornhurst, senior vice president of domestic licensing for MGM Consumer Products. “They could be novels, anthologies, children’s books, cookbooks — whatever makes the most sense.”

The first books planned are a series of original novels based on MGM’s “Poltergeist: The Legacy,” series.

MGM and Tekno are going through the studio’s entire library collection of films and television, but are focusing first on 20 classic and recent properties, including “All Dogs Go to Heaven” (both a TV and theatrical property) and the “Stargate SG-1” and “Outer Limits” television series.

Richard Weston, a partner at Major Clients Agency, brokered the deal.

Tekno Books has developed more than 900 book titles, and has another 150 under contract.
