MGM has expanded its spec universe, picking up action script “The Tenth Planet” for a reported low-six figures against mid-six, according to sources involved in the project.
John Cox wrote the actioner about a NASA unmanned space probe launched to investigate a newly discovered 10th planet in the solar system. A cabal of military conspirators within the space agency secretly turn the scientific probe into a deadly weapon of mass destruction.
When the spacecraft’s flight goes awry, the probe crash lands somewhere back on Earth, and a team of scientists must find the armed weapon before it wreaks havoc on the planet.
MGM declined to comment about the project. MGM execs Elizabeth Carroll and Damon Lee are handling the project for the studio. Seth Jaret of Revolution Entertainment is attached as producer.
Cox’s dance card is filling quickly: He also was hired by WB-based Joel Silver to write an epic action film. That deal was brought in by Jennifer Gwartz, veepee of production at Silver Pictures. Cox also wrote the TV movie “The Yacht Club” for ABC.
He is repped by Hayden Meyer at UTA, and manager Jaret. His attorney is Stewart Brookman of Weissman, Wolff.
