Mexico’s Grupo bows multiplex

Mexico City theater operator Grupo Cinemex celebrated its 101st screen with the opening of a 14-screen facility on June 26.

Cinemex expects the new theater to increase its Mexico City B.O. share above the current level of 25%. The company estimates it captures more than one-third of the capital’s box office.

The city’s biggest exhib plans to inaugurate another 39 screens before year-end and 60 are scheduled to open by summer of 1998.

Cinemex ultimately aims to operate 400 screens in Mexico City, the country’s biggest city and home to roughly one-fifth of the population.
