William H. Macy, who landed an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of the nervous husband whose best-laid plan goes awry in “Fargo,” is in final negotiations to co-star in Touchstone Pictures’ “A Civil Action” with John Travolta, sources said.
The project marks Steven Zaillian’s follow-up to his first feature “Searching for Bobby Fischer.” The project is being produced by Robert Redford and Rachel Pfeffer through their Wildwood Prods. from Zaillian’s adaptation. Macy’s nomination has served him well since “Fargo.” He received $400,000 for four weeks of work on Columbia Pictures’ “Air Force One” and is getting $750,000 for 15 weeks on “Action.” Macy plays the pivotal role of Gordon, the accountant who does everything in his power to keep his attorney friend’s (Travolta) law firm afloat.
All actors involved in the project are taking less than their usual fees, however. Macy is repped by Writers & Artists Agency.
