Two top names on Broadway are very close to pairing on a feature film. Nathan Lane is attached to star in the Island Pictures comedy “The Best Man,” and talks are under way with director Jerry Zaks to direct. If all goes as planned, Lane and Zaks — who collaborated on Broadway on “Guys and Dolls” and “Laughter on the 23rd Floor” — will begin principal photography this fall.
“The Best Man,” scripted by Marjorie Gross and Ron Zimmerman, is a romantic comedy about a mental patient who escapes from an institution to be the best man at his childhood friend’s wedding. Island’s Mark Burg and Todd Baker would produce and Howard Klein and Erwin Stoff would exec produce. Island picked up the spec in a bidding war in 1992. The project would be distributed by Polygram Pictures.
