Italian film center gets gov’t coin

ROME — Government funding of $4.5 million has been awarded for the construction of the Cittadella del Cinema, a complex to contain three screens, a cinematheque and the offices of the Giffoni Film Festival, the international family and children’s film showcase that takes place during late July in the southern Italian town.

The Giffoni town council will begin construction in March, with completion scheduled for June 2000, in time for the Giffoni fest’s 30th anniversary. Management of the complex will be undertaken by a consortium of the Giffoni council, the film fest and multinational outfit Alcatel.

Housed in the Cittadella will be the Campania Regional Cinematheque, which will specialize in conserving and promoting films for children dating from the birth of cinema to the present.
