An international cast of thesps, including French thesp Irene Jacob, Japanese actress Miho Nikaido and Indian thesps Shashi Kapoor and Shabana Azmi, have committed to star in “Side Streets,” a Tony Gerber-helmed film for Bruce Weiss’ Gotham-based Cornerstone Films.

Pic is an urban comedy about immigrant life in New York City, with five interwoven tales a la “Short Cuts,” taking place in the boroughs of New York.

Roles fashioned

Jacob will play a Euro-punk fashion designer in a SoHo-based segment and Nikaido will portray a Japanese fashion buyer in the piece.

A Staten Island setting will feature Kapoor as a fading Indian movie star who tries to revive his career. Azmi co-stars as Kapoor’s put-upon sister.

Additional casting for other segments will be forthcoming.

In competition

A completed, 20-minute segment of “Side Streets,” titled “Small Taste of Heaven” and starring David Vadim and Jose Zuniga, is in competition in the shorts section at Sundance, where Weiss made the casting announcement.

The “Side Streets” script was co-written by playwright/scribe Lynn Nottage and Gerber.
