While the weekend’s B.O. spotlight was aimed at “Batman & Robin” and its wide-release competish, another superhero was quietly staking his own claim to potent returns. Playing on just two screens — one in Chicago and one in New York — Buena Vista’s new animated musical “Hercules” brought in a muscular $800,000 over the three-day frame, making for a staggering $400,000 per screen average, according to Daily Variety projections.
After a splashy Gotham fete that included a Fifth Avenue parade, the pic opened at New York’s New Amsterdam Theater on June 15 and has since bench-pressed a hefty $1,010,177 from that engagement alone. The toon opens in L.A. on Wednesday before going wide Friday.
