Ronald F. Maxwell, who helmed the Civil War epic “Gettysburg,” will produce and direct a prequel to that pic called “Gods and Generals” with indie financing from a group of Maryland businessmen.
Pic, based on Jeff Shaara’s book, will follow the pre-Civil War years for Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson. It will also incorporate a number of female roles from civilian life in that era.
Robert Rehme is set to exec produce.
Maxwell and Shaara have formed a production company called Antietam Film Works, which is based in Hagerstown, Md. Antietam is raising financing for the pic from local sources that include the town of Hagerstown and Washington County.
Project is also working with the Assn. for the Preservation of Civil War Sites.
Maxwell is next set to helm “Joan of Arc,” which will lense next April in Portugal and France. He is expected to start “Gods and Generals” following that wrap. It will shoot in the Hagerstown area.
