Forbidden City formidable

BEIJING — Forbidden City Film Co. was recently established in Beijing with extremely powerful backing.

Partners in the new venture are the country’s second-largest network, Beijing Television, its affiliate, Beijing Television Arts Center, Beijing Municipal Film Co. and Beijing Culture Audio-Visual Publishing.

The company’s first film, a co-production with Beijing Youth Film Studio, was “Since the Days of Lei Feng.”

Despite its subject matter — the tale of China’s Cultural Revolution hero and his selfless devotion to the cause of socialism — the film is built upon a tightly written script and fine acting. It has done well in theaters, surpassing 5 million yuan ($625,000) in Beijing alone.

Forbidden City, which officially launched April 9, was approved by the Propaganda Dept. and the Ministry of Radio, Film and Television (MRFT).

The company will also be involved in TV production.
