Universal Television is in discussions with Emilio Estefan Jr. — husband and manager of pop diva Gloria Estefan — for a first-look development deal that might also cover film. Industry insiders say U has been talking on and off with Estefan for the past six months, although no deal is yet on the table. Estefan locked up a long-term recording and distribution deal for his wife and their Miami-based Crescent Moon imprint with Sony Music last year, so it’s unlikely any TV deal with U would lead to a label shift for the veteran hitmaker in the near future. If it comes off, Gloria Estefan wouldn’t be the first chanteuse to ink a movie/TV development deal with U. The studio signed a wide-ranging pact with country queen Reba McEntire last year as part of the renegotiation of McEntire’s MCA recording contract.
