In a sizzling weekend frame at the overseas B.O., dinosaurs conquered the U.K., Sony’s merry men in black blitzed Taiwan and Argentina, and Batman and his sidekick continued on a tear.

Adding fuel to the fire, “Con Air” winged into Australia with sterling results, “Speed 2: Cruise Control” had solid debuts in three markets and several very good holds in Europe, and “Anaconda” uncoiled in Germany.

“It’s one of those great summers to be an exhibitor” overseas, enthused Columbia TriStar Intl. exec VP Tony Manne, whose studio’s “Men in Black” amassed $5.4 million at the weekend.

In its first major European engagement, “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” plundered a red hot $9.2 million in three days on 477 screens (including previews) in the U.K. — a record for distrib UIP and the market’s second-highest preem in history behind “Independence Day.” The figure was 21% ahead of the original “Jurassic Park” bow.

Steven Spielberg’s colossus also posted a UIP record in Israel, pulling $266,000 in three days on 32. In Japan, where offices were closed Monday for a public holiday, UIP estimated the dinopic’s nine-day tally at more than $23 million after it minted a stellar $16.5 million in six days. The distrib put the foreign cume at more than $132 million.

Records fall

“Men in Black” scored $953,000 on 18 screens in Taiwan (a Col TriStar record, more than doubling its previous high set by “Johnny Mnemonic,” of all things) and $600,000 on 74 in Argentina (also a company record, besting “Philadelphia”).

The sci-fi comedy showed generally healthy legs in its sophomore sessions in Brazil (collecting $3.4 million to date, slipping 29%), Spain ($4 million, off 38%), South Korea ($1.3 million, easing just 2%), Sweden ($1.6 million, falling 48%) and Norway ($917,000, down 22%). The cume is an excellent $16.3 million in 10 territories.

“Batman & Robin” vaulted to $71 million abroad, powered by muscular entries in Mexico ($1.4 million on 313, a Warner Bros. record), Hong Kong ($952,000 on 30, some 84% of “Batman Forever’s” preem) and Malaysia ($885,000 on 72, Warner’s second-highest debut, behind “Eraser”).

WB estimated the Batpic’s Belgian bow at $338,000 on 46, well ahead of the predecessor’s opening, and reported a $130,500 launch on 34 in Denmark.

Joel Schumacher’s extravaganza tumbled by 40% in France for a reasonably good $4.7 million in 12 days, and by 33% in its second in Argentina, tallying $1.5 million. The nine-day haul in Taiwan is a sturdy $2.8 million.

“Con Air” took off Down Under with $1.8 million on 212 as the B.O. cooled off considerably after the school vacation. BVI’s actioner collected $4.5 million at the weekend, propelling the cume to $63.8 million. The high spots are Germany’s $14.8 million, the U.K.’s $9 million and South Korea’s $8.7 million. Polygram’s comedy “Bean” mirrored the Oz market downturn with a 53% drop in its third weekend for $10.1 million to date.

‘Speed’ on fast track

“Speed” sequel nabbed $552,000 on 59 in Switzerland, $234,000 on 48 in Norway and $110,000 on 30 in Finland. Defying gravity rather better overseas than it did at home, the Sandra Bullock starrer improved by 12% in its second in Germany (on six more prints) for $6.1 million thus far, and by 15% in Holland for $1.5 million.

The Fox pic collected $5.4 million in 13 territories at the weekend, elevating the cume to $19.1 million.

“Anaconda” slithered into Germany with a highly respectable $1.8 million on 450 in second spot behind “Speed 2.” A spotty performer, the snake pic had a fair bit of venom in France, Australia and Mexico, but was toothless in the U.K. and Norway. The cume is $24.4 million.

“Liar Liar” checked into Sweden with a jolly $291,000 on 58 and its foreign total reached $94.6 million. “Kolya” clocked a stirring $431,000 on 62 in Germany, the best result thus far for distrib BVI; in limited release in six territories, its gross is just shy of $2 million.
