FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — In a move to create an educational base for the emerging Florida film industry, Carl DeSantis — chairman of Rexall Sundown — has extended a $2 million donation to Florida Atlantic U. to establish a motion pictures studies department of the Boca Raton institution’s College of Business. A state education initiative will additionally match the DeSantis gift.
The preliminary plans for what is to be called the Carl DeSantis Business and Economics Center for the Study and Development of the Motion Picture and Entertainment Industry were outlined Wednesday. Among the participants were directors Robert Wise and Arthur Hiller, who will serve as advisers to the curriculum.
Dr. Bruce Mallen, an economist and former film producer who was involved with the development of Culver City’s Filmland Complex, is dean of the program. He said the center realizes a long-standing dream to create an academic field of study for the industry that’s mindful of both the art and commerce involved in making movies. He said it ideally serves as a practical think tank.
