D’Works, Sony negotiating ‘Diving Bell’

DreamWorks and Sony are negotiating to acquire rights to Jean-Dominique Bauby’s bestselling autobiography “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” for Scott Hicks to direct and Ron Bass to adapt. DreamWorks, which has a first-look with Hicks, would have the domestic rights while Sony, which has a first-look deal with Bass, would release the film internationally. The book recounts the life of the one-time editor-in-chief of the French mag Elle, who fell victim to a stroke that left him paralyzed, except for his left eyelid. The deal is being negotiated by CAA’s Robert Bookman and Beth Swofford.
