TORONTO — Cineplex Odeon Corp. said Wednesday that it will spend more than $18 million to build two multiplexes and expand its existing theaters on Long Island, N.Y.
The Toronto-based company said it will add eight auditoriums to its four-screen Smith Haven Mall Theatre in Lake Grove, N.Y., having reached an agreement in principle with the mall’s developer, the Simon DeBartolo Group. Construction will start this summer and is scheduled to be completed in June 1998.
In Riverhead, N.Y., a popular vacation area, Cineplex begins building a new 11-screen 2,000-seat free-standing multiplex this summer and expects it will also open next June.
And in downtown Huntington, N.Y., Cineplex will replace its existing four-screen Shore Quad Theatre with an eight-screen multiplex, scheduled to open this December.
Cineplex operates 99 screens and 36 theaters in the New York/Long Island area.
Most of the theaters will have the latest bells and whistles: curved screens, high-tech games, cafes, stadium seating and improved projection and sound.
The investment will create 700 jobs in construction and at the theaters, Cineplex said.
