Japanese ‘Evita’ rolling

BUENOS AIRES – Following Argentine and Hollywood biopics of Eva Peron, next up is a Japanese docudrama, now shooting here.

Starring Akiko Kuno, who has long played Evita in the Japanese version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s stage musical, the NHK production is spending a month in the Argentine capital.

Like Esther Goris in Juan Carlos Desanzo’s “Eva Peron,” and Madonna before her, Kuno is hoping for permission to use the balcony of the presidential Casa Rosada, from which the late Argentine First Lady addressed the masses.

And just as Madonna’s visage graces the publicity for Estee Lauder’s new “Evita” perfume, so Kuno’s is used for a Japanese scent of the same name – except that the latter has been around much longer.

Eva Peron, who died in 1952, is well-known in Japan for having shipped grain and clothing to the war-ravaged nation in the late 1940s.
